ER star to deliver his baby

Standard Reporter12 April 2012

ER star Noah Wyle plans to play a reallife doctor by delivering his wife's baby.

The 30-year-old actor, who plays Dr John Carter, said: "There will be real doctors and nurses in the room in case anything goes wrong, but I want to be the one helping Tracy bring our first child into the world."

He and his 34-year-old wife do not know the sex of the baby, due in November. He said: "We want to be surprised. We'll be thrilled if it's a boy or girl."

Wyle believes he can handle the birth because of his experience on the TV drama.

He is an honorary fellow of the Oxford Medical Society in Britain and was recently asked to address the American Medical Association on how ER can be a teaching tool for trainee doctors. "Most people think I'm a doctor anyway," he said. Recently, he was on a flight when a passenger fell ill and an urgent plea went out for a doctor.

Wyle said: "Every head turned to me, but all I could do was sink deep into my seat. Fortunately, I was with my mother, who's a nurse, and she was able to help."
