Driver using mobile 'tried to shoot two policemen'

12 April 2012

A motorist tried to shoot two policemen after they pulled him over for talking on his mobile phone at the wheel, a court heard.

Ryan Johnson, 24, drove off after being spotted on the A40 in Perivale before ditching his car in a nearby road.

A jury was told he then leapt over the marked police car's bonnet and fled down an alley, chased by constables Simon Harvey and Paul Hart.

The officers were forced to take cover when Johnson turned and fired a shot at them, with both claiming they heard a "loud bang" and saw a "flash".

They called for armed back-up and finally tracked the defendant down to his hiding place in bushes and nettles, Isleworth crown court heard.

A gun cartridge casing was found in the alleyway by investigating officers.

Pc Harvey said he shouted, "If you move you'll get shot", and Johnson yelled, "What do you mean, shot?" The officer told him it was because he opened fire, and said he then asked for help.

Johnson denies attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and firearms charges.

The trial continues.
