Drink binge QC drowned in Thames

12 April 2012

A leading criminal barrister drowned in the Thames after drinking half a bottle of vodka.

Father of two Eamonn Sherry QC, 45, vaulted railings outside the Cutty Sark in Greenwich and plunged into the water. His body washed up at the Woolwich Ferry terminal nine days later, Southwark coroner's court was told.

Irish-born Mr Sherry had represented pop star Pete Doherty and was a member of Carmelite Chambers. His lawyer wife Jo said her husband had left the family home in Tulse Hill unexpectedly at about 11.30am in May. "I thought it was odd he'd left the house without putting on his suit," she said.

"I now understand he was preoccupied about work and there were unresolved issues in chambers."

Coroner Sarah Ormond-Walshe said there was not enough evidence to support a suicide verdict and recorded a verdict of misadventure.
