'Devastated' son praises widow killed in her home

13 April 2012

The son of a grandmother who was beaten to death in her home described today how her murder had "ripped apart" the family.

Restaurateur Helen Chung, 65, was stamped and kicked to death after being followed home by an armed gang in a "long, brutal and senseless" attack two months ago. The frail widow had £128,000 in a safe in the house in Cowley, Middlesex, but the burglars took only her VW Golf car.

Minutes later the gang broke into a businessman's millionpound home in nearby Vine Lane where they threatened a 13-year-old girl at knifepoint.

Detectives are now offering a £20,000 reward for information leading to their arrest and prosecution of Mrs Chung's killers.

Her youngest son, Gordon, who lives in West Drayton, today paid tribute to a "caring and considerate" grandmother. He said: "Her last wish was to see me have children and to become a grandmother again - and that has been cruelly taken from her."

Mr Chung discovered her body on 6 November. He said: "I couldn't recognise her at first because her face was so badly beaten. When I realised it was my mum it was devastating."

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room at Belgravia on 020 7321 9251.
