Deptford dips into new super library collection

13 April 2012

The second state-of-the-art public library in two months has opened in south-east London.

The Deptford Lounge, costing £24 million, hosts a library of 36,000 books, CDs and DVDs.

As well as a café, music studio and sports facilities, the site will house Tidemill School, its artificial football pitch and assembly hall.

Councillor Chris Best, Lewisham's cabinet member for community services, said the space will open seven days a week.

The borough's 12th library follows Southwark's £14 million "super library" which opened in November.

It comes as cuts threaten hundreds of others with closure.
