Dealing with the disease

13 April 2012
  • Prostate cancer kills about 13,000 men in the UK every year. Men aged 50 and over should have regular checks.
  • Symptoms include pain or difficulty passing water, coupled with lower back pain and blood in the urine.
  • The prostate gland, which lies below the bladder, makes most of the fluid in semen.
  • Caught early, prostate cancer is very treatable with radiotherapy, hormone therapy or surgery.
  • A diet low in saturated fat and high in fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables and pulses can be beneficial.
  • Well-known sufferers include former US President Ronald Reagan, ex-Goon Harry Secombe and Lord of the Rings actor Ian Holm.
