Dangerous drivers more likely to escape fines in capital despite 1,314 spy cameras

Blind eye: only four per cent of vehicles were fined for offences

The chances of being fined for speeding or jumping a red light in London are among the lowest in the country - despite the capital having the highest number of "spy" cameras, research reveals.

The capital has one of the highest ratios of cameras-to-cars with about 1,314 cameras and 2.6million vehicles using its roads, according to a survey in Auto Express magazine today.

But only 76,523 motorists were fined for speeding in the capital in 2007 and 23,885 for running red lights. About four per cent of vehicles were caught and fined for motoring offences compared with 16 per cent in the top-of-the-league county, Northamptonshire.

London is seventh from the bottom of the magazine's league table of 42 counties, which ranks speed and red light camera operations and action taken against motorists driving while uninsured or breaking mobile-phone laws.
