Damilola girl denies hiding evidence

Patrick McGowan12 April 2012

The key prosecution witness in the Damilola Taylor murder trial today denied police told her what to say.

On her sixth day in the witness box the 14-year-old was asked what happened offcamera during videoed interviews with police. George Carter Stephenson QC, representingone of the four accused youths, asked: "Were you prepared to leave out evidence that might make the case awkward for the police?" She denied it.

During her evidence the girl has repeatedly been accused of lying. Today she was again accused of lying in her description of one of the accused. "It isn't lying, it is just being a bit wrong," she said. "Sometimes you can get a bit confused."

Damilola bled to death on the North Peckham estate in November 2000. Two brothers, 16, a friend, 17, and a 14-year-old boy deny murder, manslaughter and assault.

The case continues.
