Cyclist run over by Boris bikes trailer

12 April 2012

A cyclist told today how he was knocked over by a trailer being used to transport the Mayor's hire bikes.

David Ellis, 37, suffered cuts and bruising as well as injuries to his neck and hip after he was thrown from his bike and dragged under the trailer's wheels while cycling with a friend in Theobald's Road in central London yesterday.

The photographer, from Stoke Newington, said the trailers were "a danger to cyclists" because they are wider than the electric vehicle towing them.

A spokesman for Transport for London said: "A cyclist sustained minor injuries following a collision with a cycle hire scheme electric vehicle in Holborn.

"Our operator, Serco, requires all its drivers to undertake training before driving the electric vehicles used in the scheme."
