Cricket captain 'knew nothing of match fix'

12 April 2012

The captain of the Pakistan cricket team had no idea one of his players was receiving corrupt payments, a court heard today.

Salman Butt, 27, says he was betrayed by his former friend and agent who is accused of paying thousands of pounds to Pakistan players to deliberately bowl no balls, the jury was told.

Had he known that Mazhar Majeed and fast bowler Mohammed Amir were involved in a criminal conspiracy at Lord's in August last year he would have had no part in it, Southwark crown court was told.

Butt and Mohammed Asif, 29, deny conspiracy to cheat and to accept corrupt payments. Amir, now 19, and sports agent Majeed are not on trial. The case continues.
