Concorde takes to the water

13 April 2012

Concorde created a new image for itself today - by moving on water.

The spectacle occurred on New York's Hudson River where two tug boats towed a barge carrying a British Airways' Concorde to its new home.

The plane was taken to the Sea Air Space Museum on board former United States aircraft carrier Intrepid which is moored on the Hudson.

The Concorde, which had made its last passenger flight on October 24, had been flown from London to New York on November 10.

On Monday the plane was taken from its hangar at New York's JF Kennedy airport and towed to the edge of the Hudson four miles away before being lifted by crane on to a barge.

Today, the barge took the plane on a 90-minute journey to the Intrepid.

A similar outing by sea could await another of BA's seven Concordes which is due to travel either by barge or by road next spring to its final home at the Scotland Museum of Flight at Edinburgh.

Since the end of passenger flights for the supersonic aircraft last month, a number of Concordes have already gone to new homes.

As well as the one now residing on the Hudson, a Concorde has gone to Manchester airport, another to Grantley Adams airport in Barbados and another to a museum in Seattle in America.

Tomorrow, Concorde will fly for the very last time when another of the BA supersonic planes travels from Heathrow to a permanent home at Filton in Bristol where the plane was made.

The Duke of York will greet the flight which will see 100 members of BA's Concorde team travelling on board.

Swinging south of Ireland and heading off into the north Atlantic before coming in to Filton, Concorde is expected to reach a speed of more than 1,300mph - twice the speed of sound - in its farewell flight.

The other remaining BA Concorde will remain at Heathrow airport - probably at the new Terminal 5.
