Commuter chaos on the tube after signal failure

12 April 2012

Tens of thousands of Tube commuters suffered major disruption today after a signal failure crippled the Circle and District lines.

For many it was a repeat of the same problems getting home last night when the two lines - used by more than a million passengers day -suffered similar problems.

The outer Circle line - Embankment to Victoria direction - was suspended into the morning peak which caused severe knock-on delays to the District line.

The Piccadilly line was suspended between Hatton Cross and Heathrow Terminals 1, 2 and 3 because of a separate signal failure at Hatton Cross. Circle line services later resumed but with delays during the peak.

This week Mayor Boris Johnson pledged to "fix" the Tube in time for the Olympic Games. "All the work that needs to be done before the Olympics
will be done, I am confident," he said.

There are major concerns over the reliability of the Jubilee line, principal Tube route for the Games linking central London with the Stratford stadium, because of faults with the new multimillion-pound signalling system.
