Church Rd tops street name list

The most popular street names in London are revealed in a survey today.

The joint top names are Church Road and High Street - followed by Park Road, The Avenue and The Drive.

Royal themed names also score highly, with 34 instances of Victoria Road and 31 of Queens Road in the capital.

The league table, produced by Halifax, illustrates a deeply traditional approach to street naming, especially in the outer suburbs.

Food was another popular theme with Crab Lane, Pie Corner, Pickles Lane, Egg Lane and Bacon Drive featuring alongside Pudding Street and Pavlova Close.

But at the other end of the scale, Halifax's UK survey found one-off street names including such oddities as Aghaloo Road and Burnieboozle Crescent, Whirligig Lane, Balruddery Place, Randiddles Close and Ponker Nook Lane.

Craig Donaldson of Halifax said: "Street names reflect the heritage of the UK. Names cover heroes from military history, great parliamentarians, battles and major events.

"Others commemorate figures from the world of art, history, music, poetry and literature."
