Centrica generates Canadian interest

CENTRICA, the British Gas energy group, has spent £37.5m buying one million gas and electricity customers in Alberta, Canada.

That takes Centrica to 5.1m retail customers in North America after missing chief executive Sir Roy Gardner's expansion target of 10m by end-2003.

Last week, the group said it aims to buy electricity generating plants in Texas and Canada to ensure supply to customers.
