Carphone 'to offer free' fixed-line calls

13 April 2012

EUROPE'S biggest mobile phones retailer Carphone Warehouse will turn up the heat on rival British Telecom this week when it offers free local calls between users of its fixed- line service.

A Carphone spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports but said the company will be holding a Press conference on Thursday.

The Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph reported that the offer of free calls is designed to boost the rapid growth of talktalk, the company's residential fixed-line service which is taking customers away from BT.

In January Carphone said the service had attracted 239,000 customers. The Telegraph said chief executive Charles Dunstone will say on Thursday that 400,000 customers have now signed up less than a year after launch, and the target will be lifted to one million customers.
