Carnival's new liner damaged by blaze

A LINER under construction for cruise holidays giant Carnival was damaged by fire at a shipyard in Italy today. Tentatively named Westerdam, the 1,800-berth ship had been due for delivery next April.

The company said the fire began on the stern section of the 82,000-ton vessel at 7.30am. It was extinguished by 11am.

The extent of damage to the ship could not be determined, but no injuries were reported.
