Cancer patient buys treatment abroad

A woman dying of breast cancer was forced to fly to Rotterdam for treatment because the NHS ran out of cash to run a £200,000 radiotherapy machine.

After completing the first stage of her treatment at the Royal Marsden, Janet McLeod, could have gone to the Hammersmith Hospital for the second part.

But managers there said they did not have the £12,000 needed to run the machine. Mrs McLeod, 63, spent £6,000 on her treatment, which can give three years of remission.
