Cameron to address nation over expenses scandal

Paul Waugh12 April 2012

David Cameron will tonight address nation to declare that he understands the public's anger over MPs' expenses.

The Tory leader hastily re-shot his party election broadcast to shift the emphasis from the local and Euro elections to focus solely on the scandal.

The broadcast had been planned to be on the local and Euro elections, but the Tory leader re-shot it to focus purely on MPs expenses.

He will tell viewers: "I want to speak directly to everyone at home about the issue that is doing so much to undermine our whole political process.... You are right to be angry that some of the people you elect are taking the money you earn to pay for things that few can afford," he says.

Earlier today, speaking at the Conservatives' conference in Scotland, Mr Cameron said it was a time of "great danger" for democracy in the UK.

"I understand how deep the damage goes. Our politics are reviled, our Parliament is held in scorn, our people have had enough. This moment is dangerous," he said.
