Britons win orchestra jobs at online auditions

12 April 2012

Two London musicians have beaten nearly 2,000 rivals in a global online audition to become the only British members of an international orchestra in Australia.

Cellist Desmond Neysmith, 34, from Muswell Hill, and percussionist Feargus Brennan, 21, from Ealing, will perform at Sydney Opera House under conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.

They each uploaded an audition film to impress judges, including London Symphony Orchestra musicians, to secure their place in the 96-strong YouTube Symphony Orchestra. Rehearsals and concerts take place in Australia from March 14, and the final performance on March 20 will be streamed live around the world. Mr Brennan said it was a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".
