Boy, 10, held over fatal stone throw crash

12 April 2012

A BOY aged 10 has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a motorist was killed when youths threw stones at traffic.

Another boy aged nine has been interviewed after father-of four Michael Baker died in the crash.

The 47-year-old was a passenger in a recovery truck which crashed into a stationary lorry after it had been forced to pull over when its windscreen was shattered.

Mr Baker, a painter and decorator, had been picked up by the recovery truck after he had been involved in a crash in his own car on the M25.

The recovery driver was following an ambulance carrying Mr Baker's partner, Sheila Bright, 42, and her pregnant daughter Paige, 17, to hospital from the crash.

Mr Baker died in hospital and the recovery truck driver received treatment for a leg injury.

Police say a group of youngsters had been seen on a grass bank beside the A20 near the Swanley interchange throwing stones at vehicles just before the collision at about 10.40am on Saturday. The lorry driver had stopped after something hit his vehicle. Witnesses said he tried to steer to safety but there was no hard shoulder.

Mr Baker, from Littlehampton, West Sussex, had been travelling with his family to see friends in Sidcup. He died a month before he was due to become a grandfather for the seventh time.

Ms Bright, his partner of three-and-a-half-years, said: "I am appalled at what these kids have done. They are thoughtless idiots whose actions have killed a man and they need to get a conscience and give themselves up."
