Bosses believe Christmas parties are 'vital' reward

12 April 2012

Most managers believed Christmas parties were "vital" to reward the hard work of their staff and should be held despite the recession, according to new research today.

A survey of 1,300 managers found two thirds regarded a festive celebration as "vital" to recognise the hard work of employees throughout the year.

But a majority of those questioned by the Chartered Management Institute were concerned an expensive party this year could damage their organisation's reputation, and many believed a "team lunch" would be better.

"How can employers say thank you without incurring the wrath of the wider public? The answer is that employee engagement has never been as important as it is now, but it must come hand-in-hand with a tighter grip around the purse strings."
