BNP candidate on drink-drive charge

12 April 2012

The far-Right British National Party's top London candidate for this week's European elections is to appear in court over drink driving.

Robert Bailey, 43, was stopped by police in his car in Romford. He allegedly twice refused to give a breath test and was arrested. He also refused tests at the police station.

Mr Bailey, who is the BNP's London organiser, has also been charged with driving with no insurance. A spokesman for the Met said he was stopped at 11.20pm in London Road on Thursday. He is due to appear before Havering magistrates on Friday.

BNP spokesman John Walker said Mr Bailey would not be stepping down as other figures had not after drink driving convictions: "So why should ours?"

Gordon Brown today warned voters against the party: "We need to be clear: the BNP sympathise with the Nazis."
