Blair calls summit over EU migrants

Tony Blair today called a crisis meeting over the issue of immigrants expected to come to Britain from the European Union's 10 new nations.

Home Secretary David Blunkett, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and Work and Pensions Secretary Andrew Smith were gathering at No 10 this afternoon.

The Prime Minister wants to resolve a row about what rights people from the new EU countries - including Poland and the Czech Republic - will have to live and work in Britain. The nations will join the EU on 1 May.

Mr Blunkett is said to be fighting for migrants to be allowed to work legally, with as few restrictions as possible. But Mr Straw is understood to have warned Labour may lose votes if it is seen to be "throwing the doors open".
