Beckham to kick-off for Airfix

SALES of toys jumped 5% last year to a higher-than-expected £2.1bn, according to market research firm NPD.

Beyblades - modernised spinning tops - were the nation's biggest seller, earning £29m for US manufacturer Hasbro.

Airfix, the model aircraft maker, hopes 2004 sales will rise after the introduction of a new collection of models - representing the England football team, headed by David Beckham, - which was unveiled at the Toy Fair at London's ExCel.
