12 April 2012

BBC1's new controller was today named as Danny Cohen, the current controller of BBC3.

He was favourite for the job and replaces Jay Hunt, who is joining Channel 4.

Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision, said: "Danny is one of his generation's most talented TV executives.

"He has a deep understanding of public service broadcasting and a finely developed sense of what audiences of all ages are looking for — things hugely important as controller of the UK's most popular channel."

Mr Cohen said: "It's a huge privilege to take charge of Britain's most-watched channel and I feel honoured to have this opportunity.

"BBC1 is one of the nation's great cultural institutions. I look forward to working with a wonderful range of talented people. Jay Hunt's success means the channel is in good shape. I hope to build on these foundations."
