Barclays bankers to the BNP

13 April 2012

BARCLAYS is closing accounts held by the racist British National Party after the BBC filmed party members confessing to assaults on Muslims, a source quoted by news agency Reuters said today.

Barclays will shut about five accounts linked to the BNP, not all of which are registered in the party's name, the source said.

Britain's third-biggest bank was already reviewing its position on the BNP before the BBC's film, the source said.

'The bank had been looking at the situation for some time, but the BBC documentary last night provided evidence enabling the bank to act,' the source said. A Barclays spokeswoman declined to comment.

Some customers may question why Barclays was prepared to do business with the BNP in the first place. The bank was frequently attacked for its business links in South Africa during the apartheid years.
