Barbara Bush has open heart surgery

Former first lady Barbara Bush was resting today after having open heart surgery to replace her aortic valve.

The surgery lasted two and a half hours after Mrs Bush, 83, pictured with husband President George Bush senior, suffered shortness of breath.

Heart surgeon Dr Gerald Lawrie said the operation went well: "I expect her to soon resume her normal activities."
