Bag stuck in train door causes more Tube delays

Thousands of Tube passengers suffered chaos today after a bag got caught in the doors of a new Victoria Line train.

Commuters were forced to endure an eighth day of disruption when the bag became stuck as hundreds of passengers boarded the train.

Passengers fought to free the holdall from the doors of the new carriage, but the alarm system failed to operate and the train pulled out of King's Cross station and headed into the tunnel.

The train then continued to Warren Street station with the doors wedged open.

As the passenger continued to yank at the bag, the alarm eventually sounded.

The bag remained stuck in the door at Warren Street station because the doors are on the opposite side to King's Cross.

All 800 passengers were ordered off and the train taken out of service - causing more delays.

In a second incident a bag was also stuck but was pulled free without difficulty.

Last week one of the new Victoria line trains - part of a £900 million line upgrade - lost air pressure due to a faulty pipe coupling. It became stranded in the tunnel near Seven Sisters trapping other trains behind. Hundreds of passengers had to be walked along the track to safety.

Two other Victoria line trains - old style - also had to be withdrawn from service today.

An LU spokeswoman said: "Due to problems on a number of trains this morning there were minor delays on the Victoria line. Two incidents were caused by passengers' bags getting caught in the doors of new trains. One old train had to be taken out of service with a door defect and another old train was temporarily withdrawn to have a window repaired."

Circle, Hammersmith & City and District lines all suffered disruption this afternoon because of a signal failure at Edgware Road.
