Baby P doctor guilty of 'serious breach' in failing to spot abuse

Blunder: Dr Jerome Ikwueke failed to "fully and properly" examine Baby P
12 April 2012

A doctor who failed to spot the horrific abuse suffered by Baby P before his death was today found guilty of a "serious breach" of his professional duty.

Dr Jerome Ikwueke, 63, made a series of blunders during seven consultations at his surgery in Tottenham between May 2006 and July 2007. He failed to "fully and properly" examine 17-month-old Peter Connelly eight days before the toddler's death, the General Medical Council heard.

Peter died at the hands of mother Tracey Connelly, her boyfriend Stephen Barker and his brother Jason Owen on August 3, 2007. Jeremy Donne QC said: "Dr Ikwueke had a unique opportunity to prevent appalling abuse." The GP admitted failing to properly examine baby Peter or refer him for an urgent assessment on July 26. "If I were to face the same now I'd handle it very differently,' he said. The GMC will now consider if he is guilty of misconduct.
