BA and Emin select designer for giant paint job on Olympic planes

Winner: Pascal Anson's artwork will be painted on a fleet of BA aircraft

Artist-designer Pascal Anson has been chosen to have his artwork painted on a fleet of British Airways planes flying in and out of London
during the 2012 Olympics.

Anson, 38, beat hundreds of amateurs and professionals with his idea, which will be developed with help from Tracey Emin.

Details of how he has interpreted the competition theme of Olympic values will be revealed when the first jet has been transformed next year.

A series of planes including the Boeing 747 will be painted their entire length. The Kingston University lecturer, who is a competitive club swimmer, said it was a chance to work on a giant canvas. His previous biggest work was customising his car with wood-effect vinyl.

"What I want to try to do as an artist is to change people's perceptions of the way the world is. I want people to think about things we take for granted and look again," he said.

Emin said: "Pascal presented a clear and concise idea that we all responded to immediately. If I saw this aircraft on the runway, I'd definitely want to be on it."

Mr Anson, of Shoreham near Brighton, has developed products and featured in Design Museum exhibitions.

Residents under the Heathrow flight path have criticised Richmond council for scrapping its noise complaints hotline before BAA trials a new runway system.

Two runways will operate simultaneously in an attempt to reduce the time planes have to circle before landing. The council said residents could call BAA direct but Anne Cochrane, of the Barnes Community Association, said: "If this is going to be a trial you need someone impartial answering your calls." The first three-month trial starts in November.
