‘Asylum seeker in £2m home owes me rent’

12 April 2012

A former asylum seeker living in a £2.1;million townhouse in Kensington funded by the taxpayer owes £7,000 in housing benefit, his ex-landlord claimed.

Abdi Nur, 42, who moved into the three-storey property in Kensington last month with his wife Sayruq and their seven children, is now being threatened with legal action by his former landlord to recover the cash.

Shashi Pindoria, 52, a property tycoon based in north London, said the Nur family moved out of his five-bedroom property in Kensal Rise without paying their outstanding debt.

He said: "He was supposed to pay me £790 per week but he left without paying around £7,000.

"He was receiving money from the council but his payments had been falling short for quite some time. We asked him to catch up with the payments and then he suddenly left without telling us."

Mr Nur sparked outrage after it emerged the public was paying his £8,000-a-month rent because he said his former home was in "too poor an area"
Mr Pindoria said he was forced to spend £1,000 repairing the property because of damage caused by the family.

He said: "There was damage to furniture, there was a missing bed and worktops were badly damaged. I had to put in a whole new kitchen. They never touched the garden despite everything being provided for them to look after it. It was a right mess."

He said his letting agent was intending to pursue Mr Nur through the courts for the money he allegedly owes.
