Art student murdered in Poland

12 April 2012

A British art student has been found bludgeoned to death while on a college course in Poland.

The 21-year-old, identified only as Katherine Lucy Z, had been in Krakow for a month as part of her history of art degree and was due to go home in a couple of weeks.

Her body was spotted on a railway embankment at 5am on Saturday. Police spokesman Michal Kondzior said: "She seems to have died as a result of sharp blows to her head with a heavy object."

Katherine, who was born in Poland but held joint UK/Polish nationality, had told friends she was going to meet someone but did not say who.

"The place where her body was found is terrible at night," said one local. "Dark, far from buildings. It's scary."
