£20,000 reward in murder case

A £20,000 reward is being offered for information about the 1994 murders of two men shot outside a shop in a case of mistaken identity.

Michael McCormack, 59, of Ewell, Surrey, and John Peter Ogden, 34, from New Malden, were each shot in the back of the head as they stood outside The Sandwich Shop in Cavendish Road, Balham, London.

The men, who worked at the Indexing Company in Balham, both died at the scene after the close-range shooting.

Police say inquiries revealed no likely motive for their murders, which happened at about 2.10pm on October 21, 1994, and they believe it was a case of mistaken identity.

Detectives investigating the deaths have now launched a fresh appeal for witnesses, a reward of £20,000 has been offered and the case is set to be featured on the BBC's Crimewatch UK on Wednesday.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Cundy, who is leading the investigation, said: "We now have a substantial reward on offer and we are hoping that someone who has inside information will come forward with the evidence we need to help us secure a conviction."

Police say the suspected gunman was inside the sandwich shop apparently waiting for the victims.

Seeing the two men, he left the shop, shot them from behind and then fled to nearby Weir Road.

He drove off in a white Vauxhall Cavalier, registration D880 MYG, which was later found burnt-out in Rosendale Road at the junction with Norwood Road in Herne Hill, south east London.

He is described as white, aged around 26, 5ft 10ins tall, and was wearing a three-quarter length green jacket, blue jeans, a red baseball hat, and white Reebok trainers.
