£12m for a night with the Krays

It has been home to some of the nation's most notorious criminals - including Reggie Kray.

Now Bow Street Magistrates Court could become a haven for tourists.

The court and next door police station are up for sale at £12million and could be turned into a hotel or restaurant.

Future guests could be sleeping in converted cells where criminals such as Dr Crippen was held, or dining where disgraced playwright Oscar Wilde once lamented.

'There has been considerable interest,' said Adrian Turner of estate agent Colliers CRE, which is handling the sale.

'Subject to planning, there is potential for a whole variety of uses, from office to hotel, residential to retail, or wine bar and restaurant.'

Bow Street was the site of the first police office and the leading London magistrates court, set up in 1740.

In 1910, Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen appeared before the court. He was found guilty of murdering his showgirl wife and burying her headless and dismembered torso under the cellar of his house. He was later hanged.

When Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess flew to Britain to try to broker a peace deal, he took his exercise in the yard.

Traitor William Joyce, aka Lord Haw Haw, who broadcast Nazi propaganda to Britain, was held in custody there.

More recently, the case of Chile's former military leader, General Augusto Pinochet, on torture and human rights charges, was heard at Bow.

If a buyer is found, court hearings will move to Horseferry Road. There are plans for a new Central London magistrates court in Marylebone Road.
