£100,000 prize for cooling Tube goes unclaimed

Nearly two years ago when London Mayor Ken Livingstone offered a £100,000 prize for a way of cooling the Tube, 3,500 ideas came in from 60 countries.

They ranged from placing frozen peas on top of carriages to using cool water from underground bore holes. Today, amid warnings of a scorching summer, Transport for London announced the result: not one was good enough to win the reward.

Tim O'Toole, for London Underground, said: "What this demonstrates is that cooling the Tube is a complex issue that will not be resolved easily."
