Users of the latest iPhone are being misled by the device's battery life display, Apple admitted today.

The error, which affects the iPhone 6S as well as iPhone 6 Plus, means apparently fully-charged handsets are shutting down unexpectedly.

According to technology giant, the smartphone bug is said to occur when users change the time on their device.

Apple said they were working on a fix but in the meantime users should restart their phone and then enable their automatic time setting.

The smartphone makers have a history of bugs linked to time and date settings.

Previously, the change of the clocks in spring and autumn has confused the time settings software, leaving consumers with the wrong time on their device.

Apple is currently testing a new version of its iOS software that could fix the battery life bug.
