Anger at snub for Pc who died tackling knifeman

The family of a policewoman who was stabbed to death arresting a schizophrenic is distraught after being told that she will not be honoured for her bravery.

WPc Nina Mackay, 25, of Loughton, Essex, was killed in Stratford six years ago by 30-year-old Magdi Elgizouli.

In January last year the Met recommended that she be awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal. But relatives have been told by the Home Office that she will not receive it.

They are said to be "devastated and confused" by the Home Office ruling. Despite two letters from Downing Street promising a full explanation, WPc Mackay's mother Patricia is still waiting to be told the reason.

Mrs Mackay said: "I feel very saddened that a young woman who committed this courageous act has not been recognised for what she did.

"They should acknowledge that what sets courageous people apart is that they did what the majority would not."

In a letter to Tony Blair Mrs Mackay said of her daughter: "Her commitment, protecting the people of Stratford, was total - very courageous by any standards. She has come to represent what policing is about - commitment, dedication and courage.

"My fear that she would become a statistic in the eyes of the establishment has now become apparent."

Commissioner Sir John Stevens has asked one of his most senior officers to examine the case.

Glen Smyth, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said: "It is difficult to find the words to express the disappointment and hurt that my colleagues will feel about this."

Elgizouli pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was sent to a secure hospital.
