Amateur choir gets ready for first night of the Proms

An amateur choir from north London is to perform at the opening night of the Proms.

Counting a doctor, a teacher, a sound engineer, a wine company executive and a clergywoman among its members, The Crouch End Festival Chorus will sing in front of 5,500 people at the Royal Albert Hall tonight.

It marks a spectacular rise for the group which started life in 1984.

The choir has also sung at the Barbican, Hampton Court and Glastonbury.

Chorister Margaret Ellerby, a GP, said: "The exhilaration you get from a Prom is wonderful."
