Alstom rescue saves jobs

THOUSANDS of UK jobs were saved as France and the European Commission agreed a rescue for engineer Alstom. Brussels blocked earlier attempts to subsidise the French firm, which employs 110,000 and builds ships, trains and power equipment. The French government will buy an Alstom bond instead of a direct stake.
