All-night Tube on New Year's Eve

13 April 2012

All-night Tube services on New Year's Eve have been agreed by workers under a "groundbreaking" deal to give them a 35-hour week, it was announced today.

The Rail Maritime and Transport union said London Underground station staff will have 52 days holiday a year, equal to 43% of the year away from work including rest days.

The agreement paves the way for later running of Tubes on Friday and Saturday evenings and removes the threat of hundreds of job cuts, said the union, which held a 24-hour strike in the summer when negotiations stalled.

"Once again our members' solidarity has brought results, and we have hammered out a deal that sets the standard for the industry," said RMT general secretary Bob Crow.

An LU spokesman said: "We are pleased we have reached agreement on the implementation of a five-day, 35-hour working week.

"We are also pleased with the RMT's commitments to run the Tube 24-hours on New Year's Eve and to the principle of later services on Friday and Saturday nights.
"This follows agreements with all trade unions of a two-year pay and conditions deal earlier this year."

LU also announced today that crime and anti-social behaviour on the Tube had been "dramatically" cut in East London after a joint initiative with British Transport Police.

Robbery in the six months to September was down by a third, assaults were reduced by 7%, assaults on staff by 25% and vandalism by 37%.

Operation Cyprus, which targeted the east end of the District Line, led to 75 arrests and the issuing of 450 penalty fares.
