Albanian dies falling from 85mph Eurostar train in Kent

Eurostar service: Delayed after an Albanian national fell from a train and died
12 April 2012

A man fell to his death from a high-speed Eurostar train as it travelled through Kent last night.

The Albanian, 22, who had journeyed to London from Brussels earlier, was returning to the Continent voluntarily having been refused entry into the UK.

The line was shut for several hours after the death and delays continued into the evening.
Conservative MEP Richard Ashworth was one of the affected passengers on the 85mph train.

He said: "It defies logic, how you get a door open on a train at high speed. I hope Eurostar will launch an internal inquiry to see if changes need to be made."

In a statement Eurostar said: "In over 17 years of operating services, this is the first time we have seen a situation whereby a passenger has chosen to deliberately and physically breach these systems and force an exit from a moving train."

Police are trying to contact the man's family, reports say.
