LAVENDER WEEKEND!

A rare chance to pick your own organic lavender and see the rebirth of an old industry.

At the start of the 20th century Carshalton in south London and surrounding areas were known as the 'world capital' of commercial lavender production (Yardley built its business from here).

Now, the industry is being revived by environmental organisation BioRegional, working with the local council and Downview Prison.

At this weekend's event, you can pick your own flowers from the three-acre field before it's harvested and turned into essential oil.

There are also aromatherapy and nature talks and related food and crafts.

The project has been so successful, they're planning to turn another 20 acres of Surrey lavender-blue.

Stanley Park Allotments Stanley Park Road, Carshalton Beeches,
Surrey (020-8770 5700). Sat 2 & Sun 3 Aug, 10am-4pm, Lavender costs £1 a handful, £5 a bucket, bring your own scissors. www.suttonfestival.info.
