Tony Blair will appoint a dedicated minister for the Olympics if London wins its bid next July, it emerged today.

A big hitter outside the Cabinet would be chosen to drive through plans to host the 2012 Games at minister of state level, with responsibility for smoothing out problems.

The Government plans to step up its campaign for the Games this summer after the Athens Olympics, with a final push in the new year ahead of visits by the International Olympic Committee.
