  • The Black Watch was formed in the wake of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion, when Highlanders were recruited from various loyal clans.
  • Soldiers were stationed in small groups to prevent infighting, deter raiding and enforce the law against carrying weapons.
  • Because of their job of "watching" and the dark colour tartan they wore, they came to be known as the Black Watch.
