Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker has had a baby boy. The 37-year-old gave birth to David, her first child, in a New York hospital yesterday. Her husband Matthew Broderick, 40, was in the delivery room and it is believed her co-star Cynthia Nixon has already visited them.

The first pictures of the baby are thought to be worth $250,000 to magazines around the world and four bodyguards protected Parker's privacy at the hospital.

Workaholic Parker - who plays sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw in the hit TV series - was in the middle of filming the fifth series of the hit show when the unplanned baby made itself known. She has only just achieved showbusiness success at the age of 37 and was faced with the very antithesis of her on-screen character - being a mother.

The most recent series of the show was slashed to only eight episodes because of her expanding condition but she hopes to return to work in February.
