800 attend vigil for jaywalking schoolboy hit by cars on M23

Argument: Scott Turner, 15, hit by cars
12 April 2012

Hundreds of friends have held a vigil for a schoolboy who was killed when he walked onto a busy motorway after arguing with his father at a wedding.

Scott Turner was hit by a car after wandering onto the M23 just before 2am.

The 15-year-old was then tossed into the path of several other vehicles, including a police car.

Hours after news of the teenager's death broke more than 800 friends gathered in St Johns Park near his home in Burgess Hill, West Sussex.

Several tribute pages were set up for the youngster on Facebook.

On one of them, Jessica Lansdall wrote: "We are all going to miss you so much - you were much loved."

Ch Supt Paul Morrison said: "This is an extremely tragic event and our sympathy is with the family and friends of the young man.

"Family liaison officers are with them to offer support as they try to come to terms with their loss and will be working with the school to offer further support.

"The victim had been with relatives at a family function earlier in the evening and police are investigating to establish how he came to be walking on the motorway."

The police watchdog was informed of the crash yesterday.

A police spokeswoman added: "As a matter of standard procedure the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) have been informed."

A post-mortem examination is not expected for the next few days and no arrests were made, officers added.

Police appealing for information urged witnesses to call 0845 6070 999.
