112 TfL bosses earn £100,000 a year

Bob Kiley: earned £1.7m in his last year at TfL
12 April 2012

The number of Transport for London staff pocketing salaries of £100,000 or more has shot up by almost 50 per cent in a year.

A total of 112 officials took home a six-figure sum in the year to 31 March, compared with 76 in the previous 12 months. More than 1,400 employees earned at least £50,000, pushing TfL's annual wage bill to £880 million. TfL commissioner Peter Hendy received in excess of £550,000.

But former TfL commissioner Bob Kiley, 71, picked up £1.7 million in his last year before illness forced him to quit. At least 33 TfL officials earned more than Mayor Ken Livingstone, who chairs its board and himself takes home £137,579.

Other high earners-include Tube managing director Tim O'Toole, roads and buses boss David Brown, rail boss Ian Brown, who looks after the Docklands Light Railway and TfL's imminent takeover of the North London Railway, and lawyer Howard Carter.

The figures, published in TfL's annual accounts, come when a record three billion journeys a year are made on buses and the Tube. But delays and fares have increased and passenger satisfaction has fallen.

Phil Taylor, a Conservative councillor in Ealing who scrutinises TfL's spending, said: "Are there really 112 red-hot people at TfL? I'm not sure there is evidence of that."

A TfL spokesman said: "We look to recruit and retain the best people. We are competing all the time with the private sector for skilled staff."
