10 years’ jail for driver in chase that killed Pc

Fatally injured: Gary Toms, 37, hit his head on a kerb during the pursuit of the robbers’ car in Leyton

A gang of robbers involved in a police pursuit that led to the death of a firearms officer have been jailed.

Pc Gary Toms, 37, stepped out of a police van to chase the raiders on foot when their Chrysler PT Cruiser was boxed into a cul-de-sac in Leyton. He hit his head on a kerb when the van reversed to continue the pursuit and died six days later.

Pc Toms and other armed officers were pursuing Temitope Iyiola, 20, who raced at more than 70mph through Stratford. The Chrysler only stopped when it crashed into a squad car, injuring other officers.

Iyiola, of Upton Park, was jailed for 10 years after admitting dangerous driving and fraudulently obtaining the Chrysler, and being convicted of robbery with Austin Anti-Taylor, 19, and Mary Fowler, 21, at Snaresbrook crown court.

University of East London student Fowler, who acted as a honey trap to set up the robbery of her former boss Onyedika Chukwuma, was jailed for eight years. Her cousin Mansour-Jacques Jallow, 26, of Canning Town, who led an eight-strong mob who attacked nightclub manager Mr Chukwuma at his home in Dagenham, was jailed for six years after pleading guilty before the trial. Anti-Taylor, of Chigwell, Essex, was sentenced to seven years in a young offender institution.

Jurors had not been told about the death of Pc Toms. Fowler and Jallow — who both hold Swedish passports — face immediate deportation and will see out their sentences in Sweden.
