As any city dweller knows, the compromise for living in a central location is often space.

It now comes at such a premium that in a recent poll by YouGov, a staggeringly high 71 per cent of adults said they supported the construction of micro-apartments measuring just 334 square feet — which is a third smaller than a Tube carriage.

As we demand more from the space we live in it becomes more essential to make every inch count.

"Day to day modern living, and a trend towards more open-plan home layouts means that each space within a home is likely to have more than one function," says Sarah Inwood from furniture brand Danetti.

"Rather than separate rooms we’re seeing more of a zoned approach so we design multifunctional furniture which is versatile enough to transition from one space into another."

Cleverly designed furniture is the key to creating a comfortable and stylish home — and the good news is furniture designers are making their wares work harder than ever.

From concertina bookcases and customisable shelves to traditional sofa beds and even armchairs that transform into single beds, here are some of the best ideas on the high street.
