Retire jokes about twitching net curtains and put pampas grass firmly out of mind – London’s suburbs are (ahem) swinging.

A borough-by-borough analysis of last year’s house price growth showed a boost for the borders, with Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Havering, Sutton and Richmond-upon-Thames taking the top spots.

Many of the capital’s new suburbanites will land in three-bedroom semis – a legacy of the country’s housebuilding boom that was getting into its stride almost exactly a century ago – and others in Art Deco blocks, charmed by Crittall windows and communal green space.

And while a zone-hopping move might not quite capture the interwar idealism of Metroland, homes from this period have good lateral layouts, generous proportions and some of the biggest gardens going. Here are ten of the best on the market now.
